1998-2005 Toyota Corolla

While the body style only changed slightly with the 1998 model year, a completely new engine arrangement is now in place. The Corolla is now powered by the 1.8 liter 1ZZ-FE engine, making 125hp. The engine is facing the opposite direction now, with the intake manifold at the front. In 2000 variable valve timing was added, and the 1ZZ-FE got more torque and slightly more horsepower.

The 2003 Corolla marks the first major redesign in 10 years. (Pictured) The body is now larger and much more roomy inside. It is also equipped with the 1ZZFE engine now making 130hp. In 2005 we got the Corolla XRS with the 2ZZFE and 170hp.

Also in 2003 the all new Toyota Matrix was released. The Matrix can be thought of as basically a hatchback Corolla. The drivetrain layout is the same, and the XRS with the 6-speed and 2ZZGE are available from 2003 on. Also worthy of note is the 4wd Matrix, sadly only available with the 1ZZFE and auto tranny.

Performance Possibilities

The 1ZZFE is a very high-tech engine and is far superior to the 4AFE. Several performance parts are offered for this engine including a big bore kit making it nearly 2 full liters, and forged pistons and rods. The engine could be rebuilt for high compression and high revs, or low compression and turbocharged.

For the 2003 and newer Corollas, TRD makes a supercharger for the 1ZZGE engine. This boosts power to 166hp and 145 ft/lbs of torque. It is also factory sanctioned, so your warranty will not be voided! While this is not listed for the older Corollas, it probably could be made to work with some modifications.

If you have the XRS, then we have the more powerful 2ZZGE to work with. While the big bore kit is not available for this engine, you can find forged pistons and rods, along with the "3ZZGE" kit which strokes the engine to nearly 2 liters. The engine can be turbocharged for even more power with a low compression rebuild and other needed parts. While some say that the 1ZZFE is more boost friendly because of it's lower stock compression, this should be changed anyway with any serious turbo application. Or you can look into the supercharger kits which, while available, are very expensive.

Engine Swap Options

2ZZGE 1.8 Found in the 2000-2005 Celica GTS, the 2003-2005 Matrix XRS, and the new Corolla XRS, the 2ZZGE is Toyota's new small displacement, performance engine. It could be said that the 2ZZGE replaces the 4AGE engine. It makes 180hp and revs very high, using variable valve timing. This engine is not an easy swap, but it can be done. The 2ZZGE has a 6-speed transmission attached to it which can also be swapped into the Corolla with the right parts. See pictures of this swap being done.
